Rosefield Plantation

Rosefield Plantation, purchased by John Gray in 1729, is the home today of his great-great-great-granddaughter. A contract dated May 1, 1786, for a house to be built for Steven Gray by contractor Gilbert Leigh suggests that Steven Gray built the oldest part of the present house. A two-story, two-room addition was probably added in 1793. George Gray added the Greek Revival style rear wing and the present front porch about 1855. The house provides an excellent example of a substantial and typical plantation dwelling from the Georgian and Greek Revival styles of architecture in Eastern North Carolina.

To the rear of the house is an ancient grove of cedar trees which mark the family cemetery where generations of the Gray family are buried. The oldest marker with a legible inscription is dated 1795.
